Visual Content Designer - Contract
Remote | New York City, NY
About Subvert
Subvert.fm is a collectively-owned music platform and marketplace. As of May 2026, membership had grown past 20,000 and the platform is open to the public.
Subvert exists because this critical piece of cultural infrastructure deserves to be stewarded as a commons. Our goal is to build the better music marketplace: one that is co-owned by the artists, labels and supporters who contribute to it.
How we work
The worker members of Subvert Cooperative are responsible for creating, building and maintaining subvert.fm. We are a small, agile team that thrives on collaboration: we have complimentary skills that are amplified when we work together, and we value high-agency individuals who are team players. Everyone has prior experience working in cooperatives and/or the music industry. We are looking for someone similar to join us.
About the Role
We are looking for a Visual Content Designer to join our team, who will work at the intersection of design and marketing. In this role, you will create most of the social assets we share with our members and the public: our announcements, updates, educational pieces, features, spotlights and more. You should be comfortable doing one-off graphic design, as well as iterating on brand system templates and libraries. You will work with our Creative Director and Marketing Director to build out campaigns, extend brand applications and generate captivating visual storytelling for subvert.fm.
Responsibilities
- Create visual content from marketing briefs for social posts on IG, Bluesky, our newsletter, announcements, etc.
- Iterate on design templates for marketing assets, in some cases, creating templates for future use
- Support the ideation and creation of marketing campaigns
- Create go-live ready deliverables for sign-off by the team
You may be a good fit for us, if you
- 2+ years of experience working as a visual content designer in the industry, ideally in fast-paced, collaborative design teams and/or agencies, delivering go-live ready design assets and comfortable going from concept to delivery independently
- Have experience working with briefs from brand and marketing teams, interpreting stories and CTAs into high-impact visual storytelling, following quick-turnaround content calendars
- Have experience designing for social media and web
- Can expertly use Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity or equivalent design software
- Can quickly integrate feedback and iterate on design; have excellent time management
- Can communicate clearly and concisely about issues, blockages or challenges encountered during the work
Strong Candidates also
- Are self-motivated and have a track record of initiating high-impact visual narratives with measurable results
- Have visual art and/or design software experience beyond Figma: animation and 3D modeling software, such as After Effects and Blender; or film and videography, such as Adobe Premiere
- Have great collaborative spirit and have experience working in a cooperative
- Have passion for music and genuine interest in designing with and for artists
